Should I hire a professional to help me?

If you do decide to retain professional help, the person should be either Canadian lawyer or consultant who is a member of Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants (CSIC). If you hire someone who is not a member of CSIC, your application could be returned. If you chose not to disclose that a consultant was helping you with the application, your application could be refused for misrepresentation and you could be barred from Canada for up to 2 years. Reasons why people do hire us are various: lack of time, desire to have everything prepared on a professional level and be sure that the application will not be returned or refused because of a technicality, etc. While the forms and guides published on CIC website are available to everyone, they are far from being exhaustive. Often, they are even misleading.

Self-assessment tools are not reliable and will not give you the whole picture. Why are there such big differences in prices charged by consultants and lawyers?

The most important factor when you search for a consultant that would be the best fit for you should not be the price but complexity of services offered and willingness to personalize the services. Some professionals charge minimal fees, some charge even double or more. You should always ask what is included in the fee: Are updates to the application included? Are postal or courier services included? Is the counsel available when you need him? Will he be available once the application has been submitted? Will he be available once you land?

The fact that you hire somebody to prepare your application will not guarantee faster processing or preferential treatment at the processing level. It will help you to get through the process without unnecessary delays and mistakes and to have an advocate if something goes wrong with your application.
